中国最早的培养体育师资的高等教育专业之一。1902年创建的北京师范大学于1917年开始设立体育专修科，1930年改为体育系，至今已有60多年的历史。抗日战争期间，这个系曾随师范大学先后迁往陕西城固县和甘肃兰州市。早期的北京师范大学体育系基础理论课时较多。按照现在的学科分类，当时4年制本科学生所学的26门课程中,学科教学时数占总时数的57.4％,术科占37.2％，实习占5.4％。1917～1948年，共毕业学生500多人。
1953年秋，以北京师范大学体育系为基础，建立了中央体育学院（现北京体育学院）。1959年又恢复了北京师范大学体育系，现设4年制本科班和1年制进修生班。4年制本科的课程， 除普通大学必修公共课外，设有专业理论课11种，专业课 7种。1949～1980年共毕业学生800多名。现有专业教学人员近60人，学生300多人。
