科胡特克彗星是捷克天文学家科胡特克于1973年3月7日发现的，当时亮度约16等，距离太阳4.75个天文单位。天文学家预测当它12月28日过近日点时亮度可达到-10等左右，会成为20世纪最耀眼的彗星。世界各国天文学家都做好了充分的准备，预备对它进行史无前例的全面观测。然而，当它经过近日点时远远没有达到人们所预计的亮度，仅有短短几天肉眼勉强可见，真是令人失望。但是天文学家利用天空实验室在太空中对它的观测非常成功，在彗星中发现有水蒸气存在，还发现有反常彗尾出现。天文学家估计它是一颗很年轻的彗星，回归周期约为7.5万年。
