分致病性和非致病性两大类,广泛存在于自然界中,呈球形或卵圆形,直径为0.5~1μm,呈链状排列,长短不一,短者由4~8个细菌组成,长者达20~30个细菌细胞,液体培养基中易呈长链,固体培养基中易呈短链。大多数链球菌在幼龄培养基中可见到由透明质酸形成的荚膜,继续培养后则消失,不形成芽胞,亦无鞭毛,易被碱性苯胺染料着色,呈革兰阳性。
