铁蛋白是一种含铁的蛋白质，由铁和脱铁蛋白结合而成，其生理功能是贮存铁，以备用于合成血红蛋白。来源于胎盘的铁蛋白异构体称为胎盘异铁蛋白，它能抑制母体对胚胎同种异体抗原的免疫应答，对于维持正常妊娠必不可少。正常妊娠早孕期PLF即开始逐渐升高，孕晚期仍持续升高，近足月时才开始下降。早产和妊高征时PLF都明显降低。
