婴幼儿期无论男孩、女孩都分泌同等少量的性腺激素,这少量的性腺激素对下丘脑起反馈作用,抑制着下丘脑促性腺释放因子的分泌量。目前认为青春期的开始是由于下丘脑细胞对性腺激素的敏感性降低,循环中的少量性腺激素失去了对下丘脑的抑制作用,以致于下丘脑促性腺激素释放因子分泌量增加。垂体前叶接受下丘脑的信息后促性腺激素分泌增加。卵巢或睾丸在促性腺激素的作用下,除发生形态上的增长外,所分泌的性激素水平也相应提高。在提高了的性腺激素水平基础上,对下丘脑起反馈作用,重新调整下丘脑-垂体-性腺反馈系统的水平。
