针鼹 Tachyglossidae;spiny anteaters 单孔目针鼹科的通称。又称刺食蚁兽。背部和体侧覆以 硬刺,刺下有毛;腹面无刺而被毛,雌兽的育儿袋即在此处形成;靠近尾的基部有单一的泄殖腔孔。共2属5种,分布于澳大利亚、塔斯马尼亚和新几内亚。针鼹吻细长,鼻孔和口位于吻端;口小,无牙,舌细长;眼小;具外耳壳,部分隐于毛中;四肢短,均为5趾;雄性后肢踝部有毒距;尾短,下面裸露。适应食蚁生活,栖息于多石、多沙和多灌丛的区域,住在岩石缝隙和自掘的洞穴中。黄昏和夜晚活动。爪强有力,适于挖掘。也会卷成1个刺球保护自己。主要靠听觉和嗅觉进行活动。用细长而富有粘液的舌来捕获蚂蚁和白蚁,并用舌上的角质板和口腔顶部的硬嵴来磨碎。繁殖习性很特别,雌兽把1枚具有革质壳的卵直接由泄殖孔产到育儿袋中,10天后,发育不全的幼仔破壳而出,它在袋中靠母乳生活约2个月,长出刺后从袋中第2次出生,母兽出外寻食时,便把它安置在一个安全的处所。冬眠时,体温可降到接近环境温度。寿命很长。在动物园中短吻针鼹有的活50年以上,长吻针鼹有的活30年。针鼹有长吻和短吻两大类。
