双方站在中隔横网的场地两边用球拍往返击球过网的一项球类运动。球场长2377米，宽823米，有草地和硬地之分。网高0914米。球拍为有柄的椭圆形弦网。运用发球、击落地球、截击球、高压球、挑高球、放短球等技术，互相攻守。球可在空中还击，也可落地反弹一次后还击。以四分为一局，六局为一盘，男子比赛一般采用五盘三胜，女子比赛采用三盘二胜。
