1960年Maiman制成世界上第1台激光机后，首先应用于医学，其主要原理为光致发热效应，光致压强效应，光致发光效应，光的电场效应和光致刺激效应。在妇科应用CO2激光治疗宫颈糜烂。应用红宝石激光，钕玻璃激光，CO2激光等治疗肿瘤(多用于外阴、尿道、阴道良恶肿瘤)效果较好。对宫颈上皮内瘤、早期癌行激光锥切效果良好，也可以激光作为综合治疗的一部分，发挥各种治疗的长处以提高疗效。
