即常规银幕电影，或相对于宽银幕电影而称之为窄幕电影。指放映时在银幕上投影的画面宽高比为1.33:1（35毫米无声片）或 1.375:1（35毫米有声片）的电影。1893年，T.A.爱迪生在其发明的只能供单人观看的活动电影视镜中,使用影片的画面宽约24毫米（原为1英寸），高约18毫米（原为3/4英寸）,宽高比为1.33:1。1895年，L.卢米埃尔发明了可供多人观看的银幕放映电影，所用画面宽高尺寸与爱迪生所用的相同。1925年在巴黎召开的国际电影与摄影工作大会，将这种尺寸、比例规定为当时无声电影的标准。爱迪生之所以采用这种宽高比，可能是考虑了"黄金率"(4:3=1.33)产生的美感。20年代后期,光学录音法成功,电影进入真正的有声时代。此后，35毫米影片除画面外，并要在片孔内侧留出一条记录声音的位置（声带），这样，就只好压缩无声影片的画面面积，将摄影的画面宽高尺寸改为22毫米×16毫米，放映片门为20.9毫米×15.2毫米，即放映在银幕上的画面宽高比改变为1.375:1。
标准银幕的幕宽较小，因而观众的视角也较小，使人眼视角受到很大的束缚，观众总有一种"通过窗口看戏"的感觉，在生理和心理感受上缺乏身临其境的临场感，表现力也受到一定的限制。随着电影的发展和电影与电视的竞争，50年代后，各种宽银幕电影逐步兴起。
