牛膝(亦称怀牛膝),苋科,系多年生草本植物。又称山苋菜、对节菜、积名牛茎。根呈园柱形,茎有棱角,节部膨大,状似牛的膝盖,故称牛膝。
牛膝,在四州、湖北、陕西等省均有生产,但怀牛膝质量最佳,数量也居全国之首,1959年,曾占全国总产量的46%。
怀牛膝的特点是:条子粗壮、明亮、色泽鲜艳、油性多。
怀牛膝药效高,李时珍说它:'滋补之功,如牛之力。'牛膝气味苦酸平,主治寒湿痿痹、四肢拘挛,膝痛不可屈伸,逐血气,伤热火烂,久服轻身耐老。博爱的牛膝,长于补益肝肾,强腰膝以及活血、引血小行的作用。博爱县常年的种植面积为400-500亩,亩产干货500-600斤,最高的达800斤。年收购量25万斤左右。牛膝适宜于沙土和两合土。沙土的牛膝,颜色好、白亮,而炉土的则发黑。牛膝收获时,将根茬取出,晒半干后捆成小把,按个大小挑选,分头肥、二肥、平条三种,头肥4-6根一斤,平条8-14根一斤。挑选后,加工泡制,削把晒干,装箱外运,销往全国各地。
