指肺泡和血液之间，以及血液和组织之间的气体交换。是物理性的扩散过程，气体从分压高的一侧向低的一侧扩散。吸入的空气中氧分压比血液中氧分压高，所以氧从肺泡进入血液，再进入组织。而组织中的二氧化碳分压高于血液的二氧化碳分压，故二氧化碳由组织排入血液，再排入肺泡。
