朱顶红这一重要的观花植物，多作土栽，很少水养。如果把它半浸在水里，开花时雪白的根须，碧绿的叶叶片衬托着色彩明快的花朵，显得格外典雅美观。
水养朱顶红首先要选好种球。一般要选取3年生以上的朱顶红(球茎大于6厘米为好)，秋后霜前要剪去全部叶片，并控水促其休眠(休眠期不少于25天或至春节前50天，迟则节前难见花)，然后将球茎用1/1000深度的高锰酸溶液浸洗，并清除老根及杂质，再定植在水仙盆里(放上干净的粗砂粒或小石子，以固定球生出的新根)。若使用玻璃器具作为壁挂，可以不放砂粒或石子。水只要浸没种球一小半就行。放在没有太阳照射的地方，环境温度要保持在20-25度间。头半个月每隔2-3天换一次水，以后每隔4-5天换水一次。
为了使花朵开得更好，不妨在花葶露头后每周在新换的水中加一点无机肥，使之在为很稀薄的无机液肥。当花葶长到约3厘米主时，将环境温度提高至25度左右。待花蕾即将开放时再把植株放在环境温度约为10度的凉爽之处，这样做的目的是让朱顶红花色更鲜艳，花期更长。花后待天暖时，把水养朱顶红栽种到地下养护，生长照常旺盛。冬季再照此法培养，春节时又能开花。
