Life science is an important public elective course to enhance quality education among undergraduates.

It is possible and practical to improve the function of public elective courses through the course selecting, student guiding and various ways of study appraising.

At present,there are some matters in elective courses administration of colleges and universities such as unbalance of different elective courses,blindly electing courses,skipping classes and loose examine,which weakens the significance of elective course.

HEIs should attach importance to the problems existing in current elective courses and strengthen the development and management of elective courses in such ways as ideological education, the development of teachers and curricula, the guilding of selecting courses for students , the control of teaching quality and the like.

Due to the existing problems in college public optional courses,effective measures should be adopted to guide the students and to improve the education quality and test system.

The paper expounds the significance of this course opening as public optional course.

The author has made an effort to improve the teaching of the history of Western aesthetics, a general elective course offered by her.

Offering General Survey of Sociological Medicine,an optional course,is intended to widen students scope of knowledge and improve their comprehensive qualities.

This article takes the example of Shihezi University to analyze the problems of college elective courses in the curriculum planning,teaching staff,students\' choices,teaching management.

There are some common problems in the setting and teaching of elective courses,such as there are not abundant classes offered for elective courses,higher quality classes are short,course structure is unreasonable,the subjects of liberal arts,science and engineering can not be compatible,and it is hard to form a qualified teachers team and an perfect monitoring system.
