落叶灌木，高达3米。枝、茎成方形，棕红色，有椭圆形突出皮孔。叶椭圆状卵形至卵状披针形，长7—15厘米，顶端渐尖，基部圆形或阔楔形，表面深绿，背面淡绿。花芳香，直径约2．5厘米，外部花被片卵状椭圆形，黄色，内部的渐短，有紫色条纹；花托椭圆形，长约4厘米，口部收缩，有附属物。花期11月至翌年3月。
庭园多栽培，原产我国中部，在鄂西及秦岭地区常见野生，现各地栽培，为早春观赏树种。
花可提取芳香油；花蕾供药用，浸泡生油中，制成花蕾油，可敷治烫伤；花又能解暑生津。蜡梅含有挥发油(为1．8-按叶素、龙脑、芳樟醇等)、腊梅碱、异蜡梅碱、胡萝卜烃、黄色素。
本省栽培的除上种以外，常见有两个变种：(1)素心蜡梅var.concolorMakino花较小，内部花被无紫褐色条纹。(2)磬口蜡梅var．grandiflorusMakino花较大，直径3—3．5厘米，花被近圆形，纯黄色，香气较淡。
