性质:着生于某些细菌细胞壁外的一层厚度不定的胶状物质。因其与染料的亲和力弱,故常用负染色法染色后观察。根据其厚度不同可分为大荚膜(又称“真”荚膜)、微荚膜和黏液层三种。黏液层指能扩散到液体培养基中,不能离心沉降的胞外多糖。成分一般为多糖,包括纯多糖或杂多糖,少数为多肽或蛋白质等。主要功能:(1)保护细胞免受干旱伤害,对一些动物致病菌则可免除宿主白细胞的吞噬;(2)贮藏养料;(3)堆积代谢废物;(4)附着作用;(5)防止重金属离子等毒害;(6)起着离子交换系统的作用。产荚膜细菌在固体基质上形成大型、透明、隆起、黏液状的菌落,在液体培养基中生长后会增加培养基黏度。荚膜与生产实践密切相关,例如肠膜状明串珠菌(Leuconostoc mesenteroides)的荚膜可制备代血浆或葡聚糖试剂;野油菜黄单胞菌的黏液层可提取黄原胶,用于配制石油开采中钻井液或印染、食品业中的稠化剂;有些细菌的荚膜危害制糖、酿酒和食品等工业;少数链球菌的荚膜会引起人的龋齿。    .
