[形态]鸵鸟是当今世界上体形最大的鸟类,体长3-4米,身高一般2.4-2.8米,体重130-150千克。雌雄鸟外部形态各异。头较小,颈长,腿均裸露无羽,翅退化。雄性翼尖和尾端为白色羽毛,其余的羽毛均为黑色。雌鸟的羽毛灰褐色。2个趾1大1小,趾下有角质肉垫。
[生态]该鸟生活在沙漠草原上。其叫声很大,似狮吼。听觉、视觉灵敏,常集小群活动。善奔跑,时速50-70千米,一跃可达3.5米,这样可以持续跑5分钟。喜欢饮水和沐浴, 也很耐饥渴。食物主要以植物为主,也兼食昆虫及小爬行类动物和小鸟等。
[饲养管理]饲养管理比较简单,上海、北京动物园主要围栏饲养,在国外围养量较大,澳、英、法、美等国已作为经济禽类饲养。目前,我国广东等沿海省、市引进鸵鸟作为经济禽类饲养已取得成功,产卵、孵化率高达90%以上。
[繁殖]该鸟以雄鸟营巢为主,每窝产卵3枚左右,年可产卵10-13枚,卵重1500克左右。雌雄鸟共同营巢,孵化期42天左右。3年性成孰,寿命可达60年。
