认为艺术起源于原始民族的巫术活动。代表人物：爱德华泰勒、雷纳克、萨罗蒙赖纳许、吉德逊。巫术活动所创造的艺术具有双重的意义，它既能够增加巫术效果的气氛、情绪与形象的逼真，又能够使这种摹仿的外观创造及情绪宣染将人们带入一种幻觉真实，从而导引出一种愉快的感觉，最终又使之转化为审美愉快，这是，这种愿与武术活动的形象与情绪就脱离了实用的、功利性的目的，获得了独立的意义，不再是巫术，而是艺术了。但是，如果将巫术作为艺术发生的根本原因也是不妥的，一些学者的研究成果表明，并不是所有的原始艺术都与巫术有关。
