【植物形态】
多年生草本。植株丛生；根多分枝，常局部膨大成纺锤形或圆矩形小块根，块根长可达3.5cm，直径约7～8mm。叶丛生，革质，长20～65cm，宽1～3.5cm，具9～11条脉。花葶通常长于叶，长35～100cm；总状花序长25～40cm，具多数花，3～8朵簇生于苞片腋内；苞片小，刚毛状；花被片矩圆形或矩圆状披针形，长约3.5mm，紫色；花丝长约1.5mm；花药长1.5～2mm；子房近球形，花柱长约2mm，柱头三裂。种子球形，初期绿色，成熟后变黑紫色。花期7～8月，果期9～10月。 生于山地林下，或山谷潮湿处。主产华东、华中。

【性状】
块根呈矩圆形，两端钝圆，长1～3cm，直径6～12mm。表面棕竭色，有宽皱折，凹凸不平。质硬，断面土黄色，角质样，中柱明显，不易折断。气微，味微甜。
【化学成分】
含甙元为鲁斯可皂甙元ruscogenin和薯蓣皂甙元的多种阔叶山麦冬皂甙（阔叶山麦冬皂甙A、B、C、D、E、F、G、H）。
【性味及功能主治】
同麦冬。
