为肾功能衰竭所引起尿毒症的一种治疗方法。利用腹膜作为透析膜，把含有一定成分和渗透压的透析液输入腹腔，通过腹膜与体内物质互相扩散，使体内蓄积的代谢废物从透析液排出，而透析液中的某些物质亦可向体内移动。如此不断地更换透析液，有效地排出体内积聚的代谢产物，调节水和电解质平衡，纠正酸中毒。对改善血液和体液的病理生理变化起到一定的肾功能作用。腹膜透析也可用于治疗某些中毒，如巴比妥类药物中毒。有间歇性腹膜透析(IPO）及不卧床持续性腹膜透析(APD）等。
