在胸腺中分化成熟的T淋巴细胞经血液循环，迁移到外周淋巴器官的特定区域。此区主要由胸腺迁来的T淋巴细胞构成。在淋巴结，此区在淋巴小结之间和皮质深层，为一片弥散的淋巴组织亦称“副皮质区”。摘除新生小鼠的胸腺后，这些部位萎缩、变薄，T淋巴细胞空竭，故获此名。
