法国北部盆地。南靠中央高原，东至洛林高原，北邻阿登高地，西到阿莫里坎丘陵。东西宽约450公里，南北长约300公里，面积约占国土的四分之一。海拔300米以下。塞纳河流贯全境，有运河与卢瓦尔河、马斯河、摩泽尔河相通。有集约农业，产小麦，有乳肉用畜牧业。东部旧香槟省以葡萄种植业和酿酒业（香槟酒）闻名。巴黎位于盆地中央。
