水龙骨目蚌壳蕨科金毛狗蕨属的 1种，分布于亚洲热带及亚热带。根状茎粗大，木质，平卧或斜升，连同叶柄基部密被金黄色的长茸毛。形如金毛狗（见图），植株高可达 3米，叶片大形，三回羽裂，除小羽轴两面各有短毛外，余皆光滑，下面灰绿色，孢子囊群生裂片上分叉小脉的顶端，囊群盖两瓣，形如蚌壳。
本种为中国热带、亚热带区的酸性土的指示植物，其根状茎约含30％的淀粉，可以食用和酿酒，又可供药用，名金毛狗脊，是传统中草药，有补肾、强腰膝、驱风湿、利尿通淋的功效，其表面金黄色的长柔毛可用于外伤止血和制手工艺品。
