革兰染色阴性,不活动,长1~3μm,水中可生存5~9日,食物中可生存数十日,对阳光极敏感,经30分钟即死亡,但在低温及潮湿地方可生存到几个月。最常见病原菌是福氏(B族)痢疾杆菌,其次为宋内(D族)痢疾杆菌,再次为志贺(A群)痢疾杆菌,其余为舒密次(C群)痢疾杆菌、鲍依德痢疾杆菌。所有的痢疾杆菌均产生内毒素,志贺菌还能产生外毒素。
