形态特征:落叶灌木,高达2米;枝条直立开展。有刺;小枝圆柱形,微屈曲,无毛;紫褐色或黑褐色,有疏生浅褐色皮孔;冬芽三角卵形,先端急尖;近于无毛或在鳞片边缘具短柔毛,紫褐色。叶片卵形至椭圆形,稀长椭圆形,长3--9厘米,宽1.5--5厘米,先端急尖稀圆钝,基部楔形至宽楔形,边缘具有尖锐锯齿,齿尖开展;无毛或在萌蘖上沿下面叶脉有短柔毛:叶柄长约1厘米;托叶大形,草质,肾形或半圆形;稀卵形。长5--10毫米,宽12—20毫米,边缘有尖锐重锯齿,无毛。花先叶开放,3--5朵簇生于二年生老枝上;花梗短粗,长约3毫米或近于无柄;花直径3—5厘米;萼简钟状,外面无毛;萼片直立,半圆形稀卵形,长3—4毫米,宽4—5毫米,长约萼筒之半,先端圆钝,全缘或有波状齿,及黄褐色睫毛;花瓣倒卵形或近圆形,基部延伸成短爪,长10--15毫米,宽8—13毫米,猩红色,稀淡红色或白色;雄蕊45—50,长约花瓣之半;花柱5,基部合生,无毛或稍有毛,柱头头状,有不显明分裂,约与雄蕊等长。果实球形或卵球形,直径4—6厘米,黄色或带黄绿色,有稀疏不显明斑点,味芳香;萼片脱落,果梗短或近于无梗。花期3—5月,果期9—10月。
用途:各地习见栽培,花色大红、粉红、乳白且有重瓣及半重瓣品种。早春先花后叶,很美丽。枝密多刺可作绿蓠。果实含苹果酸、洒石酸、构椽酸及丙朴维生素等,干制后人药,有驱凤、舒筋、活络、镇痛、消肿、顺气之效。
产地分布:产陕西、甘肃、四川、贵州、云南、广东。缅甸亦有分布。
