又称白毛茛碱。为一种异喹啉生物碱,分子式C21H21NO6。1862年J.D.佩林斯首先从毛茛科植物白毛茛中分离得到。它与小檗碱等多种异喹啉生物碱共同存在。熔点132℃,比旋光度[α]厙-50°(0.3克/100毫升无水乙醇),[α]-68°(2.5克/100毫升氯仿);能溶于丙酮、苯、乙醇等溶剂,不溶于水。其盐容易水解,较难得到很好的结晶。其盐酸盐为吸水性粉末;熔点116℃,[α]+127°(4克/100毫升稀盐酸);能溶于水、乙醇、微溶于氯仿、乙醚。其硫酸盐亦为吸水性粉末。北美黄连碱早期曾用作子宫止血剂和抗菌防腐剂,现已为更好的药品取代。
