白玉屏是乾隆于1749年命宫庭造办处工匠制成,屏的一面是由雕刻家朱彩刻上王羲之(快雪时晴帖)书法,另一面由姚作仁刻上王羲之及其书僮玩鹅的情形,王羲之素以爱鹅闻名,屏上的玩鹅图的雕刻灵感或源自晚明画家描绘王羲之玩鹅人物山水图。
乾隆一生曾多次御览这件法书,并且一再题诗记语,前后达七十则,可见其钟爱的程度,乾隆更将此帖与王洵的《伯远帖》、王献之的《中秋帖》并列为三件稀世珍宝,于养心殿西暖阁内,特僻“三希堂”存放。
乾隆更经常临摹此帖,乾隆十四年(1749)己已冬,他命宫内巧匠,将他所临摹的字,刻划在一件玉器上,并在《快雪时晴帖》内赵孟頫的题跋下方注写:“己已腊日雪后,乘兴缩临此帖一过,命朱采刻于姚宗仁所制玩鹅玉器,亦一佳话也——三希堂并识”等语。而“玩鹅玉器”,所指的就是此件“《快雪时晴帖》三希堂白玉插屏”。
“三希堂《快雪时晴帖》白玉插屏”的屏面为朱采刻上乾隆本身临摹《快雪时晴帖》的得意之作,并铃刻“三希堂”、“乾隆御玩”、“内府图书”等印。插屏另一面则由姚宗仁所精制,以深刻手法刻“羲之爱鹅”的画面,深浅错落的乾隆朝工法,将人物、袍服、衣摺、松石枝干等制作的层次分明,极具神采,透光再视,乃意境深远的拨墨画作。
