肌肉不自主的收缩反应，多因受到附近的刺激所引起。见于炎症、创伤、中枢神经系统和周围神经病变等。在某些情况下有制止邻近组织或器官的活动而减少疼痛的作用，故又称为保护性肌肉痉挛，例如腹膜炎时，腹肌紧张性痉挛，控制腹部的活动以减少疼痛。
