佛教用语。通常有两种含意：①原来如此的，即心性本净，"真如"之心,本来"清净"；②经过努力,恢复得来的，即本净之心，为烦恼妄念所染污，烦恼妄念一旦破除，又还原为"清净"。"心"，佛教通常区分为"妄心"和"真心"两种。妄心指通常人的心理状况、思维活动,是克服的对象；真心是指清净的精神实体,是体认、冥契的目标。禅宗六祖慧能尤为着力阐发心净思想。他继承《维摩经》的思想，在《坛经》第35节明确提出"随其心净，则佛土净"的命题。《维摩经·佛国品》说:"欲得净土,当净其心;随其心净,则佛土净。"《弟子品》说:"心垢故众生垢,心净故众生净。""佛土"、"众生"的"净"、"垢",皆由于心。"心净"，则佛土净,众生也自然净。故《坛经》第十八节说:"人性本净，为妄念故，盖覆真如；离妄念，本性净。"第二十节说："世人性净，犹如清天"，"妄念浮云盖覆，自性不能明"。"人性"，指"真如"、"佛性"，亦即"真心"之性。其意是说，"心性"本来是"清净"的，只因被烦恼妄念所盖覆，故变得不净了，一旦除却妄念，当即复归心净，得到解脱。佛教"心净"观念对于唐代李翱和宋明理学家的性情说有着深刻的影响。
