胎儿肺泡Ⅱ型上皮细胞合成的肺表面活性物质含有卵磷脂与鞘磷脂，可使肺泡表面张力减低，维持肺泡的稳定性，预防新生儿呼吸窘迫综合征发生。表面活性物质的主要成分为卵磷脂，妊娠20周时已可在羊水中测出，26周后缓慢上升，孕35周后急剧增加，L/S比值大于2∶1，被认为是胎儿肺功能成熟的指标，极少发生新生儿呼吸窘迫综合征(RDS)。当L/S＜1.0时，很可能发生RDS。
