反射式镜头实际上是一种超远摄镜头，外观特征是短而胖，比相同焦距的远摄镜头短一半左右，重量也较轻，因而手持相机拍摄显得灵活、方便。这种镜头的结构较简单，相质较优良。常用的反射式镜头的焦距为500mm和1000mm。
反射式镜头的主要缺点是通常只有一档光圈，因而对景深的控制不便，，也不能用于快门优先的自动曝光。此外，使用反射式镜头后，相机取景屏较暗，“裂像”和“微棱镜”聚焦指示也会失灵，因而聚焦不便。
