身长约32厘米。通体以灰色为主。头顶、后颈、背部、尾上覆羽和中央1对尾羽的表面概呈银灰色；翼小覆羽和中覆羽呈亮黑色，初级飞羽端部渲染灰褐色。眼先羽须和细狭的眉纹呈黑色；前额、头部两侧和整个腹面的羽毛均为白色。虹膜红色，嘴基部蜡膜黄色，嘴黑色，脚黄色。
栖息于海拔600～2200米的开阔田坝区至低山丘陵的稀树草地和林缘地带。食物主要是昆虫及小型鼠类、蛙类，有时也捕食小鸟。营巢于乔木树顶端，每窝产卵3～5枚。
20世纪的60年代在滇中高原地区较为常见，80年代以来的考察中，遇见频次甚少, 《中国濒危动物红皮书•鸟类中》列为易危种。
