释敬脱。不详姓氏。汲郡人也。童少出家。以孝行清直知名。虽该核小大偏明成实。讲解周镜不亏声问。开张衢术章疏惟新。为后学宗仰。又善声韵兼通字体。苍雅林统识其科踪。文章篇什颇豫伦伍。同住房院罕见余谈。手不辍卷专师广赡。威仪修整未曾反顾。身极长大充满圆成。时共目之以为僧杰。人有达于帝者。乃追住慧日。四海齐架又无与竞。志节坚正最为称首。帝欲试诸大德谁为刚亮。通命引入允武殿。敕监门郎将段文操。拔刀逐之令走。诸大德并趋步速往。唯脱缓步如常。语操曰卿何事以此相逼。及上殿坐语论佛理。帝徐顾操曰。众僧素不知俗法。监门何得催耶。私异脱之大志也。敕赐大竹扇。面阔三尺。即令执用。并赐松抱高屧。令著于宫中而出。帝自送之曰。诚僧杰矣。尔后常弘成实无替时序。以大业十三年卒于东都鸿胪寺。春秋六十三。自脱之听学也。常施荷担母置一头。经书及笔又置一头。若至食时留母树下。入村乞食用以充继。其笔绝大粗管如臂可长三尺。方丈一字莫不高推。人有乞书者。纸但一字耳。风力遒逸睹之不厌。皆施诸壁上来往观省。东都门额。皆脱所题。随一赋笔更不修饰。时慧日有沙门法楞者。偏弘地论著述疏记。声名相副见重道场。及于终世。以事闻奏。帝哀之。殡殓所资皆从天府。
