中心纲根管藻目根管藻科的1属。细胞直,扁圆柱形，或稍弯。常相连成长链，连接靠壳面的一个突起，或一个小刺，进入相连的细胞内。也有单独生活的。常见的面为壳环面，壳环面上的次级相连带（或称间板）呈鳞状或环状，是分种根据之一。突起或小刺的形态，也是重要的特征。色素体多，小盘状。有复大孢子，休止孢子和有性生殖。
本属55种，中国有18种以上。大多浮游，海产，淡水产的很少。如距端根管藻。本属藻类是鱼类等的食料。依化石记录约出现在2000万年前。
