用人工机械方法维持或辅助患者呼吸的治疗工具。其主要作用是保证患者所需要的足够的通气量，改善换气功能，给足够的氧和排出二氧化碳。对呼吸衰竭和呼吸肌麻痹的患者可起到关键支持治疗的作用。呼吸器大体有四类：①定压型(压力切换型）：呼吸器输送气体到肺内，当压力达到预定数值后送气停止，吸气转换为呼气。②定容型(容量切换型）：呼吸器输送按调节好的气量，当达到预定气量后，吸气转换为呼气。③定时型：按预定时间送气，从而达到呼吸转换。④高频呼吸器，分射流和振荡两种，是一种高频率低潮气量的呼吸支持疗法。其机理与以上呼吸器不同，临床应用有待进一步实践与总结。近年生产的呼吸器可具备多类型功能，可按病情选用。
