基因信息（geneinformation）
是存储在由DNA（少数RNA）分子片段组成的基因中的生物遗传信息。生物代代相传的正是决定他们的种、类及个体生命性状特征的信息。这些生物性状包括：结构与功能，如形体、外貌、智力、器官基质及其特征、对某些疾病的敏感性、神经系统等；总数超过104个不同的酶；细胞内的复杂过程；形成化合物的聚合物；先天性本能活动的控制等。基因信息的功能实现主要是通过蛋白质。克里克（Crick）于1971年对自己在1958年提出的遗传信息传递中心法则做了补充，阐明了信息传递的方向和连续性。DNA可自身复制，并可转录成RNA，以mRNA为模板合成蛋白质称为翻译。蛋白质的氨基酸顺序是由基因编码的遗传密码碱基顺序所决定的。近年来的研究指出，蛋白质的活性不单取决于其氨基酸顺序，而且与其特定的构象的完整性密切相关。因此，可能存在另一种“折叠密码”，它决定多肽链向三维结构的转变。折叠密码是什么？它是如何指导蛋白质折叠？这正是当今关于新生态链折叠研究的关键问题。人类基因有3～3.5万条，基因组构成了一本长达100万页的浩繁的“天书”，破译它的全部信息还需要一代代的努力。
