本片聚焦中国福建省一所普通中学，一个山区小县城的年轻的学子们琐碎、重复和疯狂的高三生活。一本作为独白，贯穿始终的失袪童真的学生日记，将隐藏在学子们机械近乎麻木的学习生活背后的巨大压力爆发出来：身为父母的农民，从凌晨5点到晚上8点辛苦劳作，每天的收入仅仅是13元钱，而高三学生一学期的学费是2500元（不包生活和住宿费）。
而父母的期望则是：“只要她喜欢的工作，我都支持她，如果钱不够，可以把房子卖掉，只要她愿意，当妈妈的愿意付出一切……”——一个苍老的女人对着镜头说道。懂事的学子悬梁刺股，绝望的学子叛逆逃学。一个“坏学生”讲述了他为什么翻墙出逃，不上课，眷恋网吧的原因：并不是因为打游戏有多么好玩，而是可以凭借高超的技巧赚到钱，与其他行业一样，游戏靠的是信用和手艺……
与其说观众在影片中看到的是一个具有理想主义色彩的集体奋斗史，不如说影片更真实地呈现了悲壮如蝼蚁的个人奋斗历程。
