行走在茂密的树林中，经常会听到“梆梆、梆梆”连续敲打树干的清脆声响，这是啄木鸟在为树木做“身体检查”。你看它工作的是那样认真负责，从不放过一棵病树，它的两只脚紧紧抓住树干，硬挺挺的尾巴支撑着身躯，笔直坚硬的嘴不停地啄木，它围绕着树木从下到上旋转着敲打，从这棵树又飞到另一棵，它那细心的态度，真象一名有经验的医生，只要听到那里的声音有些异样，便知道树的病因就在这里，于是，立即施行“外科手术”，一顿猛敲，将患处敲成一个小洞，把隐藏在树皮底下的害虫，一下子捉出来吃掉，使大树的“病”很快痊愈，继续茁壮成长。因此，啄木鸟得到了个“森林医生”的美称。 啄木鸟俗称“（口奔）打木”，它们很少在地上活动，属攀缘树栖鸟类。它们具有强直如凿的嘴，舌头细长，且先端带钩，能伸进被凿开的树干里，灵巧地把虫子钩出来。它们几乎完全以昆虫为食，在总食量中，昆虫竟占90％以上，有的甚至高达99% ，且均为森林害虫，如蚂蚁、甲虫、毛虫、天牛幼虫、象（虫甲）、金龟（虫甲）、吉丁虫、小蠧虫、螟蛾、及臭蝽蟓等。值得提出的是，那些藏在树皮和树干里的害虫，对林木危害最大，往往会造成树木枯死或导致被风吹断，从而降低树干的使用价值，只有啄木鸟专能致这些害虫于死地，这是其他食虫鸟所望尘莫及的。有的啄木鸟在喂育雏鸟的食物中，只是天牛幼虫就占了57% ，可见它们的益处实在不小。据观察，当啄木鸟在树干啄树寻虫时，常发现有山雀在后面跟随，边啄食啄木鸟的遗漏“饭菜”，边鸣叫歌唱，这是为什么呢？原来，啄木鸟用山雀站岗放哨，如果山雀的歌声因飞来的雀鹰而突然停止，专心寻食的啄木鸟便知有情况，于是急速转移或躲藏起来。这种现象生物学上称作共生关系。 我国有28种啄木鸟，遍布全国各地。常见的科：类有蚁鴷（地啄木鸟）、姬啄木鸟、大斑啄木鸟（花啄木鸟）、绿啄木鸟（黑枕绿啄木鸟）、星头啄木鸟（红星啄木鸟）和三趾啄木鸟等。这些种类除去蚁鸳有季节性迁徙外全部属于留鸟。它们一年四季都能在森林中啄食害虫，这对于防治树干害虫方面的做用之大，效果之长久性，乃是药物防治所不能相比的。 近年来，我国有的地区，在每年7 、8 月间，用悬挂“招引木”方法招引啄木鸟，已经取得初步成功。他们利用失去用材价值的腐朽木料作招引木，或者将健康木段劈开挖，再接原缝捆紧，把它绑在树干或树的主枝上，这样，可以招引到啄木鸟在里面作巢育雏，从而增加林内啄木鸟的数量，扩大这个“森林医疗队”的成员，提高捕食害虫率，更好地保卫着国家用材林的生长。
