有全身性或局限性，有先天性或后天性，常为男性化综合征之一。女性多毛症不一定有阴蒂肥大、声音低哑等所有男性化特征。可发生在正常月经及生育能力正常的妇女。可能由于体内具有细小的肾上腺皮质腺瘤，产生另一种内分泌素，影响毛发的过度生长和分布。垂体功能紊乱或卵巢功能低落，亦会有轻度的多毛症。多毛严重应寻找以上原因，针对病因治疗，必要时可服用抗雄激素药物或局部处理。
