| 褐铁矿 limonite 以含水氧化铁为主要成分的 、褐色的天然 多矿物混合物。早先认为褐铁矿是成分为2Fe2O3·3H2O的一种独立矿物，但 X射线衍射分析表明，它们大部分是隐晶质的针铁矿，可混有纤铁矿、赤铁矿、石英、粘土等，含吸附水及毛管水；成分可变，但基本上为FeO（OH）·nH2O。物理性质亦可变，但总是呈各种色调的褐色，条痕黄褐色。光泽暗淡。硬度视其成分和形态而异，为1～5.5。通常呈钟乳状、葡萄状、致密和疏松的块状产出，也常呈黄铁矿晶形的假象出现。褐铁矿是氧化条件下极为普通的次生物质，由铁的硫化物或碳酸盐等氧化而成。在硫化矿床氧化带中极为常见，构成“铁帽”，可作为找矿标志。也可在沼泽、湖泊及泉水沉积中通过无机或生物沉淀而形成。法国的洛林，德国的巴伐利亚，瑞典等地形成有重要价值的铁矿。褐铁矿是次要的铁矿石，含铁量低，但较易冶炼；还可用作颜料，是黄土中的色素物质。
