传递弱相互作用的矢量粒子。早在20世纪40年代末，李政道、M.罗森布拉斯、杨振宁模仿电磁相互作用的情况，提出弱相互作用是通过中间玻色子传递的思想。在50年代,实验上主要研究低能弱相互作用（β衰变）,中间玻色子的思想没有引起很大的重视。随着高能中微子碰撞实验研究的开展，理论上需要引入中间玻色子来解释高能弱作用过程。按照60年代S.L.格拉肖、S.温伯格、A.萨拉姆提出的电弱统一理论，除了带电的中间玻色子(W±粒子)外，还可能存在中性的中间玻色子（Z0粒子）。1973年实验上观测到中性弱流存在，这是对电弱统一理论的一个重要支持。按理论预言,中间玻色子质量大约在80GeV左右,寿命大约短于10-17s。作为高能实验物理的一个重要事件,1983年1月和6月,在欧洲核子中心(CERN)分别发现W±和Z0粒子(图1、图2),它们的质量分别为80.8±2.7GeV和92.9±1.6GeV。
