大班胝多啰底崛多降生于南方一商主家,成年后于佛教中出家,为说一切有部比丘,慧解极利,悉能忆持毗奈耶十万颂,大般若波罗密多十万颂,于外道明处亦极善巧。为求密咒金刚乘法,遂往东方及海中小洲,又往西方多处,遇大阿阇黎宝称,于十三曼荼罗中请受灌顶,又遇大阿阇黎智密,于六十曼荼罗中求受灌顶,又遇尼波罗国大班胝多十力,请传灌顶及教授多种,诸续注释亦从此三阿阇黎广事咨求。其后印度东方有处行大庆会,有一状如外道之瑜伽师,褴褛异常,师于之共语,知其有他心通,师起心念:“汝为谁?”其人即言:“我为得成就者阿悉多伽那。”师遂依止约一月,听闻多种教授,其后又从得成就者奥俱啰那陀听受无量诀要。而后曾于南方噜卢罗底等国,为三十精舍之上座,师于生起次第已得坚固,所娴续部约五十部云。
