南天星座之一。1752年法国天文学家拉卡伊为了填补原有星空空隙划定的一个南天星座。最初叫“化学炉座”。星座内的星都很暗。西接玉夫座，东南为波江座包围，大体上在波江座的一长串暗星组成的河曲处，但很不容易把它与这些暗星区分开来。在天炉座有一个著名的天炉座星系团。
