中国电影导演。原名凌风。四川省合江人，生于北平。毕业于北平美术学院和南京国立戏剧专科学校。1938年，进入汉口中国电影制片厂任美工师兼演员。同年，投奔晋察冀抗日革命根据地，先后担任边区戏剧协会的乡村艺术辅导、乡村艺术学校校长、冀中军区火线剧社社长等职。1945年在延安鲁迅艺术学院戏剧系任教员，1946年进延安电影制片厂。1947年加入中国共产党。同年，在延安当战地新闻记者，后随干部大队南下，先后任华北联合大学艺术学院戏剧系教员及石家庄市电影戏剧音乐工作委员会主任等职。1948年，在东北电影制片厂任导演，导演影片《中华女儿》，影片在第 5届卡罗维发利国际电影节上获"自由斗争奖"。1950年后，在北京电影制片厂任导演，50年代导演了《陕北牧歌》、《金银滩》、《春风吹到诺敏河》、《母亲》、《深山里的菊花》、《红旗谱》等影片。影片《红旗谱》较好地展现了他的创作风格和艺术才华。1961年以后，导演《春雷》、《草原雄鹰》（合导）、《李四光》、《骆驼祥子》等影片。《骆驼祥子》于1982年获中华人民共和国文化部优秀影片奖、第3届中国电影金鸡奖和第6届电影百花奖。1984年，导演影片《边城》，并荣获第 5届中国电影金鸡奖"最佳导演奖"。他的导演艺术风格节奏鲜明、色彩浓烈、时代感真切、生活气息朴实浓郁。1999年3月2日在北京逝世。
