在气体液化之前，必须把气体中的杂质去除的过程。按照杂质的种类，可以采取化学方法、冷冻方法和物理吸附的方法去除杂质。比如可用碱溶液去除CO2，用加热到300℃的镍板催化H2、O2成为H2O而去除了氢中的氧，利用蓄冷器可以有效地清除容易冷凝的杂质，利用活性炭或分子筛在低温下可以大量吸附那些冷凝温度与它接近的杂质气体。选择利用以上方法可实现气体纯化。
