   地质历史中形成有工业价值煤矿床的时期。又称成煤期或成煤时代。聚煤作用从早元古代已开始,如以菌藻类等低等生物遗体为原料形成的石煤。但真正具有工业价值的煤矿床是从晚泥盆世才开始。就全球范围而言,有 3 个主要聚煤期:晚石炭世-二叠纪、侏罗纪、晚白垩世-第三纪。对不同国家和地区,主要聚煤期各有差异。中国最主要的聚煤期包括:晚石炭世-早二叠世;晚二叠世;早 、中侏罗世 ;晚侏罗世-早白垩世。
