带褶边的晰蜴生活在澳州北部的干旱多沙区，它们身体纤细，长1米左右，呈浅褐色，有一个很大的褶边绕着头颈。这个褶边通常是折叠着覆盖在肩上的。
这种晰蜴一般停在树上休息，只在捕食时才下到地面上来。它们以蚂蚁、蜘蛛和一些小型哺乳动物为食。如果在进食时受到干扰，它们会竖起后腿，迅速逃跑。逃跑时，它们还会将尾巴伸出来保持平衡。
如果走投无路了，晰蜴会转身竖起颈部的褶边。褶边上有很多棱条，就像雨伞上的伞骨一样。当它完全张开时，直径可达20厘米或更宽。
褶边张开后，晰蜴就会张着嘴来回摇动，这是在发出警告：“滚开！”
