1993年1月由原孙坊乡改名而设。位于县境东北部，东界六家桥，南接沙堤，西邻河上与东来，北接白路乡和临川区。总面积60.5平方公里。辖月塘、清水、尺江、李公权、安仁、罗家、徐埠、邹家、邓家、南门、下港、庙上、青山等13个村委会和1个居委会，104个村小组，84个自然村。2000年，有各类居民4665户，18788人。耕地19511亩，其中水田19276亩。镇政府驻地孙坊街距县城24公里。
全镇地属半平原半丘陵，西南高东北低。崇仁河由南而东绕境北去，宝水渠从沙堤乡通过倒虹吸管穿过崇仁河床入境，加之自有石路水库（中型）和4座小（二）型水库，境内农田基本获得灌溉。农作物以水稻、果蔗、棉花和花生为主。2000年，水稻种植面积16737亩，总产7205吨，单产430公斤。果蔗面积5876亩，总产量达30555吨，跃居全县第一。果业以柑桔为主，至2000年，种植面积已达7400亩，产柑桔370吨。全年出栏生猪11468头，家禽137.5万羽。养殖水面2750亩，年水产品总量555吨，仅次于沙堤乡。
乡镇企业主要有崇仁水泥电杆厂、孙坊建材厂、弘远粮食加工厂、华茂电力设备有限公司、德安黄栀子果业公司等。
2000年，全镇工农业总产值8531万元，其中乡镇企业产值4300万元，农业产值4231万元，农民年人均收入1900元。
镇内有初中1所，完小12所，在校学生3100人，教职工147人。有中心卫生所的防疫站各1所，医务人员17人；村级卫生所12个，医保人员30人。1993年，新建占地6000平方米的集贸市场1个。微波电视、调频广播和程控电话号码基本实现村村通。
