联合国《千年生态系统评估报告》正式发布。这项由95个国家1300多名科学家历时4年完成的研究表明，人类赖以生存的生态系统有60%正处于不断退化状态，地球上近2/3的自然资源已经消耗殆尽。
《报告》指出，过去60年来全球开垦的土地比18、19世纪的总和还要多，1985年以来使用的人工合成氮肥相当于此前72年的总量，在过去50年里，10%~30%的哺乳动物、鸟类和两栖类动物物种濒临灭绝。科学家警告说，在未来50年内，全球生态系统可能还将继续退化。
《报告》强调，人类观念的改变是拯救生态的第一要素，不要认为自然资源取之不尽用之不竭；各国必须制定相关法律，要求所有的经济决策都应当将自然成本包含在内，通过调整政策和机制，减缓生态系统退化。
据悉，《千年生态系统评估》是由世界卫生组织、联合同环境规划署和世界银行等机构组织开展的国际合作项目，于2001年6月5日启动，是首次对全球生态系统进行的多层次综合评估。
