【来源】
为锦葵科植物草棉等的种子所榨取之脂肪油。植物形态详"棉花"条。
【化学成分】
种子油中含亚油酸(41～45%)、棕榈酸(20～25%)、油酸(30～35%)、硬脂酸等的甘油酯和植物甾醇，粗制油中含有有毒的棉酚。
【药理作用】
棉子油喂饲小鸡，增加血脂质水平之程度较其他植物油(如玉米油、葵花油等)为高；可能系其中含环丙烯型脂肪酸，此种脂肪酸能增加小鸡的血清胆甾醇水平、主动脉的粥样硬化，并促进胆汁的排出，而肝中胆甾醇含量反较低，故可能是促进胆甾醇自肝中移至血液及胆汁中。棉子油对小鼠引起心血管疾病的作用也高于玉米油。棉子油给大鼠灌胃(等量分4天连服)半数致死量为255±22毫升/公斤，最大耐受量为203毫升/公斤。死后解剖有全身性的毛细血管静脉郁血、红细胞崩解、毛细血管出血、失水、内脏失重、胃部的大细胞浸润性溃疡、肾小管及骨胳肌的变性。在慢性毒性试验中，给犬静脉注射棉子油的混悬剂6或9克/公斤，可使其分别死于第15及第5天，而同等剂量的豆油则并无伤害。其毒性参见"棉花根"条。
