五环芳香烃有十五个异构体，其中五个有致癌性。3，4-苯并芘为特强致癌物，1，2，5，6-二苯并蒽为强致癌物，1，2，3，4-二苯并菲为中强致癌物，1，2，7，8-二苯并蒽和1，2，5，6-二苯并菲为弱致癌物。
六环芳香烃
六环芳香烃的异构体比五环芳香烃的更多，但进行过致癌实验的仅十多种。其中3，4，8，9-二苯并芘是强致癌物，1，2，3，4-二苯并芘致癌性很强，3，4，9，10-二苯并芘及1，2，3，4-二苯并芘的7-甲基衍生物也有明显致癌作用，其余六环芳香烃无致癌作用或仅有弱的致癌性。
七环以上的芳香烃研究得较少。
